La poesia “Lenore” illustrata da Henry Sandham

Questa poesia apparve inizialmente nel volume Poems by Edgar A. Poe, nel 1831, con il titolo “A Pæan”. Ma fu completamente rimaneggiata da Poe e pubblicata con il titolo “Lenore” nel 1842 in preparazione di una sua pubblicazione sul giornale «The Pioneer», dove apparve nel febbraio 1843.

Le due versioni sono pressoché totalmente differenti: “A Pæan” è composta da 11 stanze di 4 versi l’una, mentre “Lenore” ne ha solo 4, di varie lunghezze. Nella prima, poi, non si menziona Lenore.

Nella prima stanza di “A Pæan” si legge:

e nella prima di “Lenore”:

hey loved her for her wealth —

Il volume “Lenore” illustrato da Henry Sandham

Il volume fu pubblicato nel 1886 da Estes & Lauriat a Boston, con le illustrazioni di Henry Sandham e le incisioni sotto la supervisione di George T. Andrew. Ci sono diversi errori nella breve biografia, in particolare sulla nascita di Poe, che riporta Baltimora nel 1811, anziché Boston nel 1809.

Henry Sandham fu un pittore e illustratore canadese, nato il 24 maggio 1842 a Montreal, figlio di John Sandham ed Elizabeth Tate, e morto il 21 giugno 1910 a Londra.

La rilegatura è finta pelle di coccodrillo su cartoncino.
