Il fumetto “The Black Cat” apparve nel primo numero della rivista «Yellowjacket Comics», pubblicata nel settembre 1944 da The Frank Comunale Publishing Company. La rivista durò soltanto per 10 numeri dal 1944 al giugno 1946.
L’adattamento a fumetti del racconto di Poe “Il gatto nero” fu disegnato da Bill Allison (1880-1946), un fumettista attivo durante gli anni ’30 e ’40. Non è stato accreditato l’autore dei testi.
“The Black Cat” faceva parte della serie “Tales of Terror”. Nella serie comparvero altri 3 adattamenti a fumetti dei racconti di Poe:
- “The Pit and the Pendulum”, Numero 3 del novembre 1944. Disegnato da Gus Schrotter.
- “The Fall of the House of Usher”, Numero 4 del dicembre 1944. Disegnato da Gus Schrotter.
